According to a recent article on TheAge.com.au, wealthy Australian women are seeking out celebrity plastic surgeons in Beverly Hills to have their female genitals reshaped. Dr Robert Rey, who stars in the reality TV series Dr 90210, says the outpatient procedure “became the hottest trend in plastic surgery in 2006 in response to the popularity of Brazilian-style waxing.”
As defined by Wikipedia.org, “labiaplasty (sometimes spelled labioplasty) is a plastic surgery procedure involving the labia, any of four folds of tissue of the vulva (female external genitalia). As with other procedures… labiaplasty may be undertaken for functional reasons, aesthetic reasons, or a combination of the two. The procedure can involve creation or reshaping of the labia.” Performed under local anesthesia, labiaplasty is an outpatient procedure. Side effects may include mild discomfort and swelling for up to two weeks.
In truth, I have never put that much thought into my female genitalia. Why should I? I’ve certainly never had any complaints, not that the mere thought of that hypothetical situation doesn’t send me to the drink. Hell, who am I kidding, it sends me to the bottle! Then again, it’s not as if I haven’t seen a penis I didn’t secretly wish was a little bigger, thicker, or longer. I have. But, at the end of the day, I stand strong next to my belief that vaginas, penises, and – most importantly – faces, were not meant to look the same. After viewing a few before and after pictures, however, I also believe there are no shortage of pretty serious, insurance claim worthy, exceptions.
