The American Society of Plastic Surgeons offers a great new animation tool for those who want to get a better idea of what’s going to happen before they go under the knife. But first you should know: this is NOT actual video footage of surgery. It’s nothing more than animated drawings, and yet, it’s pretty graphic.

Okay, short of watching an actual plastic surgery in progress, this is about as close as you can get – and, if a picture is worth 1,000 words, a 3-D animation is worth at least 10 times that. If you’re one of those people who faint when you get a flu shot, you might want to skip these little animations. But if you are insatiably curious about plastic surgery – you’re going to love this!

The animations come from Understand.com’s library of computer animations. Plastic surgeons love these state-of-the-art presentations because they save the docs time, and they communicate so much more than words alone. With these innovative multimedia tools, you can view the step-by-step technique for just about every procedure, from a chemical peel and laser hair removal to an aerola-incision breast implant.

This is a much more sophisticated alternative to the before-and-after photos and written procedure descriptions that grace most plastic surgery websites. With these new tools, you will have a much better idea of what’s going to happen while you’re under. And for many people, just knowing that is enough to put them at ease.
