Snopes.com discredits the urban legend of the drugged victim awakening in a bathtub of ice with an abdominal bandage and a note telling him to call 911 because his kidney has been stolen. Yet it’s been lurking around the Internet in a scary cyber story since at least 1991 – it happened to someone I know in Las Vegas and Houston, really! - and made a gruesome appearance in the 1998 horror flick, “Urban Legend.”

But this horror story is actually “real” and it’s happened more than once in India. As The New York Times reported this week, officials in India have busted up the largest kidney-stealing ring, said to have been responsible for 400 to 500 stolen kidneys.

Police investigator Mohinder Lal told the paper that four doctors, five nurses, 20 paramedics, three private hospitals, 10 pathology clinics, and five diagnostic centers were all involved in this gruesome ring.

Police believe that due to the size of the ring, doctors and hospitals in Delhi and its suburbs must have been aware of the operation during the nine years that it was active. The alleged ringleader, Amit Kumar, was not nabbed in the raid, while several of his victims were taken from the facility during the raid and are now recovering in a hospital. Police, meanwhile, are said to be fearful for their lives as they are witnesses to this real-life urban legend.

Oh, but that Pop Rocks rumor? Totally fake.
