Unnerving Alternative to Gastric Bypass Surgery
Published: Saturday, July 21, 2007 - 19:03
Cut and Bait: Not up for that whole gastric bypass drama, but not exactly thrilled about breaking your scale either? CNN.com is reporting that ulcer surgery-which involves cutting the vagus nerve-could be an alternative to more invasive weight loss procedures. The results are far from conclusive, but some surgeons like Dr. Robert Lustig are optimistic about the effects on weight loss. Says Lustig, "I think this will be a rational alternative for a cadre of patients that are sort of in the middle there. With as much obesity as we have in this country, that's a big middle." The article notes that while patients reported few signs of hunger, the amount of pounds shed thanks to the surgery is less significant than the weight loss achieved through gastric bypass surgery.
