Smoothbeam™ Laser for the Treatment of Acne and Acne Scars

The Smoothbeam laser works by fighting acne at the source, emitting a wavelength of light that is absorbed by the water in your skin. Because the skin is made up of over 80% water, this method is very effective. During treatment, the laser penetrates the skin's dermis, heating the skin's upper layers and sebaceous glands. This process changes the way the glands function. Acne and acne scarring is visibly reduced with just a few days although treatments every 6 months are recommended.

With so many different non-evasive laser treatment options available today, trying to decide which is the right one for you can be overwhelming. Although the Smoothbeam laser is a successful option for the diminishment of fine lines and wrinkles as well as for the treatment of skin discoloration, its benefits are most pronounced in cases of acne, acne scarring and sebaceous hyperplasia. This is because the FDA approved Smoothbeam laser targets overactive sebaceous glands in the skin, getting to the root of the problem.

When used for the treatment of wrinkles and fine lines, the Smoothbeam laser stimulates the generation of new collagen by the skin. Patients begin to see a noticeable difference in just a few days, although several treatments may be necessary depending upon the severity and type of condition being treated.

A typical Smoothbeam laser treatment begins with the application of a topical numbing cream. You will wait for approximately 30 minutes while this takes effect. The practitioner will then give you safety eyewear to protect your eyes. Following this, the practitioner guides the laser using a small handheld probe, each laser pulse being preceded and followed by a patented cooling spray.

Although the procedure is relatively painless, some patients may feel some stinging or burning. The topical anesthetic helps to relieve this discomfort. A typical Smoothbeam laser treatment takes about 15 to 30 minutes at which point patients can return to work or their normal activities. There is very little risk of side effects although temporary redness or swelling may occur.

The price of a Smoothbeam laser treatment depends upon the size of the area treated. Treatments range from $150/ facial area to $500 or more for the whole face and neck.

For more information on the Smoothbeam laser, contact your dermatologist.
