CO2 Laser Resurfacing: Banish Fine Lines
Published: Friday, December 29, 2006 - 20:09
The CO2 laser, or laser resurfacing, is one of the newest laser treatments on the market. This laser is most effective in the treatment of fine lines, wrinkles, and sun-damaged skin, but has also been proven an effective treatment option for acne, scarring, tattoos, psoriasis, and uneven skin tone. Furthermore, because CO2 laser resurfacing removes damaged skin, it is known to decrease the incidence of skin cancer in those who opt for this treatment.
Using today's most advanced laser technology, the CO2 Laser treats the damage done to skin by sun and time. During the procedure, the laser practitioner uses a special hand held device which emits the laser beam, quickly removing the thin outermost layer of skin. This laser works by vaporizing the water in the skin's tissue which causes the skin to contract and tighten. Because the laser is essentially damaging the skin, it stimulates the production of collagen which, when healed, gives the skin a more youthful appearance.
The procedure takes between 45 minutes and 2 hours depending upon the area and size of treatment. The amount of pain a patient may feel is dependent upon type of anesthesia and personal pain tolerance. In most cases the laser practitioner will offer the client a local, intravenous, or general anesthetic. All in all, the laser resurfacing procedure carries minimal risk of scarring, pain, infection, as well as produces less swelling and bruising than one might experience in dermabrasion or surgery. Furthermore, according to dermatologists, laser resurfacing gives more consistent and predictable results than these other alternatives.
Recovery from CO2 laser resurfacing takes about two weeks, after which patients can return to their normal activities. Not unlike other extremely deep peels, the CO2 laser creates a wound similar to severe sunburn. This is because the skin's outer protective layer has been removed. Redness may remain for a few weeks or months although make-up may be applied within two weeks after treatment.
