Status Surgery

Are breast implants and Botox injections the new Fendi Spy Bag? In Britain, they are, according to an article in The Daily Mail, which says that "plastic surgery has become a status symbol - and even something to brag about."

Over here, celebrities like Ashlee Simpson would rather 'fess up to lip-synching than talk candidly about their plastic surgery; Star Jones only recently publicly came clean about her gastric bypass after years of issuing emphatic denials.

In England, the article states, that's not the case. British celebs like Tara Palmer-Tomkinson and Nikki Grahame have seemingly had no qualms showing off their nose job and breast implants, respectively. There's also an extreme amount of prestige attached to surgeons who are considered A-list. Sure, your handbag may be a Gucci and your car may be a Jaguar, but is your nose a Martin Kelly?

"Good surgery is expensive, and having work done can be another way to show what you're worth," says cosmetic surgery adviser Shannon Leeman. "Just because a surgeon has a scalpel that doesn't make him a sculptor, but the very best surgeons are now regarded as the ultimate designers. They are sculptors of women's faces and bodies and are as coveted as Marni and Marc Jacobs. For the sort of woman who lives in an architect-designed house and cares about the labels she wears, getting the right surgeon to perform your procedure is as much of a statement as carrying an Hermes Birkin bag.

"Just because a surgeon gave your friend a great tummy tuck two years ago does not mean he'll give you a nose job to boast about," says Leeman.

Leeman cites Dr. Martin Kelly as the go-to doc for nose jobs, Dr. Norman Waterhouse for facelifts, Dr. Naresh Joshi for eyes, Dr. Patrick Malluci for breast implants, Dr. Bryan Mayou for lipo, and Dr. Dalia Nield for tummy tucks.

"Securing the best surgeon to perform the right procedure tells everyone that you know how to look after your looks and ageing process," she says.

The article also quotes London beauty salon owner Christina Christoforou, who calls celeb fave Dr. Michael Prager "the Karl Lagerfeld of injectables."

"The richest women in the world fly in to see him," Christoforou raves.

The general consensus among British women who've had plastic surgery is that they're taking pride and making investments in their looks, and aren't ashamed of showing it.

"If you see a great movie or you eat in a fantastic new restaurant, you share the news," says Marie Patterson, who's had three threadlifts. "Well, I feel exactly the same about finding a great surgeon."
